Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week

As a member of IPIA (Irish Petroleum Industry Association), Maxol are once again proud to support Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week which takes place this year between 25th September and 1st October.

The aim of Carbon Monoxide week is to highlight that Carbon Monoxide (CO) can, and does, kill. It is colourless, odourless, hard to detect and it can kill in less than three minutes. On average, six people in Ireland die every year as a result of unintentioanl carbon monoxide poisoning. However, there is a lot you can do to safeguard against it including:

  • Boilers, heating systems and appliances should be installed and serviced regularly by a reputable, registered engineer.
  • Never use ovens or gas ranges to heat your home.
  • Make sure rooms are ventilated and that air vents are kept clear.
  • Sweep chimneys and flues regularly and make sure that they are kept clear.
  • Do not leave lawnmowers or cars running in a garage.
  • Do not burn charcoal such as on an indoor barbecue in an enclosed space.
  • Do not sleep in a room with a paraffin heater or an unflued gas fire.
  • Fit an extractor fan in your kitchen.
  • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm.
