Insurance Reformer, Dorothea Dowling, Wins Maxol Irish Motor Industry Person of the Year
Dorothea Dowling was named the 2002 Maxol Irish Motor Industry Person of the Year at an awards ceremony in Dublin on 25th November, in recognition of her outstanding work as Chairperson of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board.
Minister for the Environment and Local Government, Martin Cullen TD, presented the award to Dorothea Dowling, who as the author of the report and a voluntary member of the MIAB led the most comprehensive investigation of the Irish insurance industry to date. This has resulted in a series of Government moves to tackle the high cost of Irish motor insurance. Ms Dowling, who is Group Liability Manager with CIE, was recently appointed Chairperson of the Interim Personal Injuries Assessment Board to assess compensation costs, which contribute to rising insurance costs.
There were nine nominees for this year’s awards, which are run in association with Irish Motor Industry Magazine. Now in its fifth year, the awards recognise the contribution that key Irish motor industry individuals have made both to the industry and beyond - whether it be through their local community or internationally. Last year’s winner was Tom Kiernan former Irish and Lions rugby star and past President of the Irish Rugby Football Union and member of the International Rugby Board.
Commenting at the awards ceremony, Tom Noonan, Chief Executive, The Maxol Group said:
“Maxol is delighted to continue to be the sponsor of the Irish Motor Industry Person of the Year Awards and to be associated with such a remarkable group of people as those being recognised here today. Dorothea Dowling has been widely acknowledged, as a leading force in Irish insurance reform which is exactly what the awards are about. She has managed to combine her career with her leading role as voluntary member of the Board and continues to contribute to the future of the Irish insurance industry – ensuring fairer prices not only for the motorist but all those who avail of the services of the industry.”
Mr. Paul O’Grady, Managing Editor of Irish Motor Industry Magazine, also speaking at the awards ceremony commented:
“For the past five years, the Maxol Irish Motor Industry Person of the Year Awards have recognised some of the exceptional people in the business. Many of the nominees here today have not only excelled in their own particular businesses but are recognised for their input in particular activities at both domestic and international level, and also for giving something back to the community. I would like to congratulate Dorothea Dowling and all the Person of the Month winners who are honoured here today."
