Today 19th March, Maxol and Ford Ireland joined forces to introduce the Maxol E85 Ford Fiesta Sporting Trophy Rally Championship as the first series of its kind to be powered by bioethanol in Ireland. This event in itself demonstrates a sea change in favour of environmentally friendly fuels and leads the way to a more sustainable future by showcasing C02 efficient rallying. Drivers confirmed to take part in the series include, Alastair Fisher, Tadhg Buckley, Elfyn Evans, Barry Greer, Paul Quinn, Aidan McBride, Kyle Orr, Stephen Wright and Meilyr Evans. The next in the series of events kicks off on Easter Sunday, 23rd March, at the UAC Easter Rally, Newry and competitors face another four challenging rallies in both Northern and Southern Ireland. The series concludes with the Cork ‘20’ Rally on 28th September. All the events will be National A, one day format over approximately 100km each day.
The championship is potentially the most exciting and challenging way to enter national rallying and a great way to experience the sport. The fuel also gives a useful performance increase to the cars, thereby enabling the FST drivers to improve on their already impressive stage times.
Staged over 6 rounds, all on Tarmac, the new Maxol / Ford series offers Irish competitors the chance to compete on more classic events at an economical level.
Speaking about the FST, Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland, said: “The series bears out what hundreds of everyday drivers of Ford FlexiFuel vehicles (FFVs) in Ireland have come to realise: in terms of design and performance, these really are ‘no compromise’ vehicles.”
The ethanol, produced in Cork and distributed by Maxol, is sourced from milk and derived from renewable sources of grass and cereals upon which the cows that produce the milk are fed.
According to Brian Donaldson, General Manager – Marketing & Retail, The Maxol Group “This is an exciting time for bioethanol fuels in Ireland and one in which Maxol has taken the lead by introducing both E85 and E5 to motorists through a large number of our service stations in the Republic of Ireland. We believe that our association with the Rally will promote the many benefits of E85 to the general motorist, encouraging them to use this environmentally friendly fuel on our roads”.

E85 Fuel is currently available from 26 Maxol Service Stations. Ford offers FlexiFuel (FFV) versions of the Focus and C-MAX, with the Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy following in Spring ‘08. The fuel at the Rally will be supplied directly to all participants at the pump price of around €0.94 per litre*, making this an economical saving.
Motorsport Ireland's jurisdiction covers the 26 counties and has under its umbrella 34 affiliated motor clubs that are the actual organisers of all sporting events. In each year there are approximately 230 events listed in the official calendar and these cover 11 different branches of the sport.
