CANCELLATION OF FUEL DUTY RISE WELCOMED BY MAXOL

Brian Donaldson, Chief Operating Officer of the Maxol Group, said the Chancellor's decision to cancel the planned fuel duty rise in September was good news for hard-pressed families in Northern Ireland.

"There is little cheer elsewhere for consumers whose household incomes are being squeezed and who have seen the price of essential items rising because of inflation. For most people in Northern Ireland a car is essential for daily life and George Osborne's decision is the rightone for them. For many years motorists have been an easy target for the Treasury but with the possibility of the UK facing a triple-dip recession it would have been wholly unacceptable for the Chancellor to implement aduty hike."

"The fact that this government has frozen fuel duty on several occasions shows that they have heard the voice of angry consumers for whom fuel costs are a significant component of their weekly spending. The continued freeze on duty is also some comfort for local businesses whose costs are rising at a time when overall market conditions remain depressed."
