Thursday, 15th August 2013, Local man Ger Coughlan has been named as the National Retail Manager of the Year 2013, by independent trade magazine, Shelflife as part of the GRAMS (Grocery Retail Awards in Management). Ger manages MAXOL MACE Skehard Road, MAXOL MACE Ballincollig and MAXOL MACE Ballinrea on behalf of Maxol's licensee, Donal Spillane.

Now in its eight year, the Grocery Retail Awards in Management (GRAMs) is the first and only national management award scheme exclusively devoted to recognising the best managers in the Irish retail, wholesale and off-licence sectors. Ger was recognised amongst hundreds of retail managers across the country as being a standout leader within the Irish retail grocery industry.

Commenting on the announcement, store manager Ger Coughlan said: "I am delighted and humbled to have been recognised as a leader in the industry. Behind every successful individual is a great team of people so this isn't just an achievement for me personally; it's an achievement for my boss, Donal, my colleagues and the customers who support our business".

Congratulating Ger, Willie O'Byrne, Managing Director BWG Foods (owners and operators of MACE in Ireland) said: "It is always a delight and an honour when someone within our network receives national recognition for being best-in-class. Ger is very deserving of this industry accolade and is a wonderful ambassador for the MACE brand. I congratulate Ger and the wider team across Donal Spillane's three stores on this achievement and wish them continued success with the business".

Brian Donaldson, Chief Operating Officer, The Maxol Group, commented, "We are absolutely delighted for Ger in winning this top industry award and proud of his achievement. It provides great recognition for him personally and for all of his team involved in delivering a truly excellent service and making Ballinrea, Ballincollig and Skehard Road, real destination service stations for our customers. Ger is a great motivator of staff and has an extremely keen eye for detail, along with a passion and real commitment to engage with his customers and in making each of the 3 sites 'at the heart of it' in their local communities".

Originally from Blackrock in County Cork, Ger Coughlan has a retail career spanning 27 years having worked in a number of supermarket groups before taking up his current position seven years ago. Since joining Donal Spillane's team in Cork, Ger has enjoyed numerous successes and currently manages 50 people across three locations.

Of the three stores, MAXOL MACE Ballinrea is the longest running having first opened its doors in 2006. MAXOL MACE Ballincollig was the second to open in 2010, which was followed by the opening of MAXOL MACE Skehard Road last year.

MAXOL MACE Ballinrea is open Monday – Friday, 4.30am-10.30pm, Saturday, 6.30am-10.30pm, and Sunday, 8.30am-10pm. MAXOL MACE Ballincollig is open Monday – Sunday, 7am – 11pm and MAXOL MACE Skehard Road is open 24/7.
