Maxol – A Short History
12 April 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of McMullan Brothers Limited, now known as the Maxol Group. The family-owned Irish company was formerly registered on that date and held its first board meeting in Belfast on 17 May 1920.
William and JG McMullan, the co-founders of the company, sowed the seeds during the Great War when they began selling lubricating oil and paraffin in Belfast from the back of a horse and cart. By the early 1920s, they were the sole distributors of Mex Motor Spirit on the island of Ireland. Within a few more years, the brothers had one of the biggest truck fleets in Ireland, and twenty-three depots.
Time and again, the company have been an industry pioneer, leading the way with electronic pumps, blending, self-service, promotional campaigns, electronic card payments and green energy. It was the first company to import LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) into Ireland, first in alliance with Calor, and later with Kosangas. The company has also transformed the brand over the years to ensure it stays top of mind and relevant for its customers.
The company has been a proud patron of multiple sports and sporting events over the century, with a particular focus on ‘all-Ireland’ sports such as amateur boxing, rally driving, GAA and rugby. In 2019, Maxol announced professional rugby player, Jacob Stockdale, as their first ever Brand Ambassador. View more of the companies historic moments below;
