Pay At Pump Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is credit/debit card pre-authorisation? +

A pre-authorisation is a temporary hold that is placed on a specific amount of the available balance on a credit or debit card. A pre-authorisation is not a charge to your card and no funds have been debited from your account.

  • How much will the credit/debit card pre-authorisation be? +

The amount that will be pre-authorised on your credit/debit card will be the maximum amount you selected to purchase at the pump.

  • Who is responsible for pre-authorisation? +

Pre-authorisation is a requirement that is mandated by Visa and MasterCard on both Maxol, as the merchant, and your bank, as the card issuer. The rules governing pre-authorisation are set by Visa and MasterCard. While Maxol currently complies with all of their requirements, we are aware of a small number of banks that have not yet completed the necessary system changes needed to comply with Visa and MasterCard’s latest requirements.

  • When will the pre-authorisation be released from my credit/debit card? +

For the majority of customers, the pre-authorisation will be released almost immediately following the transaction. However, we are aware that customers of certain banks are experiencing delays in seeing the pre-authorised amount being released on their cards.

These currently include customers of Bank of Ireland and Permanent TSB who can experience delays of up to 10 working days to have the pre-authorisation released. Both banks have assured us that they are working on a solution to this issue and it should be available to customers in the near future.

Simply return to the same pay terminal and select the ‘Ticket’ option on screen and insert the debit/credit card used. A copy receipt will be issued automatically.
